If you’re getting into accounting in the UK, you need to know Sage 50.
It’s not a nice-to-have. It’s not something you can “pick up later.” Sage 50 is the accounting software that UK businesses actually use, day in, day out. And if you want to land your first accounting role, knowing your way around it is basically a prerequisite.
But here’s what most people get wrong: they think they can learn Sage 50 from a few YouTube videos or by clicking around a free trial. You can’t. Not properly. Not in a way that makes an employer trust you with their accounts.
Let’s talk about why a proper Sage 50 training course matters – and what to look for when choosing one.
What is Sage 50 and why does it matter?
Sage 50 is desktop accounting software built specifically for small and medium-sized businesses. It handles everything from invoicing and purchase orders to VAT returns, payroll, and bank reconciliation.
Here’s why it matters: over 500,000 UK businesses use Sage products. Walk into almost any small accounting practice, any high street business with an in-house bookkeeper, or any SME with a finance team – there’s a very good chance they’re running Sage 50.
When employers post job ads for junior accountants, accounts assistants, or bookkeepers, “experience with Sage” appears more than almost any other requirement. Not Excel. Not Xero. Sage.
That doesn’t mean other software isn’t important (Xero is growing fast, and we’ll come to that). But Sage 50 is the foundation. If you only learn one piece of accounting software, make it this one.
Can’t you just learn it on the job?
Some people do. But think about it from an employer’s perspective.
They’ve got two candidates for a junior accounting role. One says “I’m a quick learner, I’ll pick up Sage on the job.” The other says “I’ve completed CPD accredited Sage 50 training and used it during my 3-month work placement.”
Who are they going to hire?
Every hour an employer spends training you on software is an hour they’re not getting work done. Businesses want people who can sit down, open Sage 50, and start being productive from day one. A proper Sage 50 training course gives you that.
What should a good Sage 50 training course cover?
Not all courses are created equal. Some give you a quick overview and call it done. That’s not enough. A proper Sage 50 training course should take you through:
Setting up company accounts
Before you can do anything in Sage 50, you need to understand how to set up a company correctly. Chart of accounts, financial year settings, VAT scheme configuration, opening balances. Get this wrong and everything that follows will be off.
Sales and purchase ledgers
This is the daily bread and butter of accounting work. Raising invoices, recording purchases, managing supplier and customer accounts, dealing with credit notes and refunds. You’ll spend most of your time in these modules, so you need to know them inside out.
Bank reconciliation
Matching bank statements to Sage records. It sounds simple but it’s where a lot of errors surface. A good course will teach you how to reconcile accounts efficiently and spot discrepancies before they become problems.
VAT returns
Every VAT-registered business in the UK needs to file returns, usually quarterly. Sage 50 generates VAT returns based on the transactions you’ve entered. You need to understand how to review the figures, make adjustments, and submit correctly. With Making Tax Digital now in full effect, this skill is more important than ever.
Month-end and year-end procedures
Running trial balances, generating profit and loss reports, balance sheets, closing the books at year-end. This is where you move from data entry to actually understanding the financial position of a business.
Payroll basics
Not all Sage 50 training covers payroll, but it should. Even if you’re not running payroll yourself, understanding how it integrates with the main accounts is valuable. PAYE, National Insurance, pension contributions – it all flows through Sage.
Why CPD accreditation matters
Here’s something a lot of people overlook. There are hundreds of “Sage 50 courses” online. Some are great. Many are rubbish. The easiest way to tell the difference? Check whether it’s CPD accredited.
CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. When a course is CPD accredited, it means an independent body has reviewed the content and confirmed it meets professional standards. It’s a quality mark that employers recognise and trust.
Our accounting programme is fully CPD accredited and includes comprehensive Sage 50 training alongside Xero. You’re not just learning one tool – you’re building a complete skillset that covers the UK accounting landscape.
Sage 50 vs Xero – do you need both?
Short answer: ideally, yes.
Sage 50 dominates in established SMEs and traditional practices. Xero is the choice for startups, modern practices, and cloud-first businesses. The market is shifting, and more firms are adopting Xero every year.
But Sage 50 isn’t going anywhere. It’s too deeply embedded in too many businesses. The smartest move is to learn both. That way, you’re not limiting yourself to one type of employer.
Think of it this way: Sage 50 gets you in the door at the majority of UK businesses today. Xero makes sure you’re still relevant in five years. Both together make you stand out from other candidates who only know one.
That’s exactly why our programme covers both – because we’ve seen what employers actually ask for, and it’s increasingly “Sage AND Xero.”
The missing piece: real experience
Here’s something that separates a useful Sage 50 training course from one that just ticks a box. Practice.
You can watch someone demonstrate bank reconciliation in Sage 50 and think you understand it. But the first time you sit down with a real bank statement that doesn’t quite match, with transactions you don’t recognise and a manager asking you why the figures are off – that’s when you really learn.
This is why a guaranteed work placement is so valuable. You’re not just learning Sage 50 in a classroom or on a practice dataset. You’re using it in a real business, with real money, real deadlines, and real consequences.
Every programme at Swiss Training House includes a guaranteed 3-month work placement. You’ll use Sage 50 (and often Xero too) in a genuine working environment. When your placement is done, you won’t just say you know Sage – you’ll actually know it.
If you’re exploring a career change into accounting, Swiss Training House’s main programme walks you through the full journey from beginner to placed professional.
What jobs can you get with Sage 50 skills?
More than you might think. Here are the roles that specifically look for Sage 50 experience:
- Accounts Assistant – the most common entry point. Processing invoices, reconciling accounts, preparing basic reports. Salary: £22,000 – £26,000
- Bookkeeper – managing the day-to-day finances for one or more businesses. Many bookkeepers go freelance and manage their own client base. Salary: £24,000 – £30,000 (employed) or set your own rates (freelance)
- Payroll Administrator – running payroll for employees, handling HMRC submissions. Salary: £23,000 – £28,000
- Credit Controller – chasing payments, managing debtor accounts. Sage 50 is heavily used here. Salary: £24,000 – £30,000
- Junior Accountant – assisting with management accounts, year-end prep, audit support. Salary: £25,000 – £32,000
And those are just the starting points. Once you’ve got a couple of years of Sage experience, doors open to senior finance roles, practice management, or running your own bookkeeping business.
How to choose the right Sage 50 training course
If you’re comparing options, here’s a quick checklist:
- Is it CPD accredited? If not, move on
- Does it include hands-on practice? Reading about Sage isn’t the same as using it
- Does it cover Xero too? You’ll want both
- Is there a work placement? This is what separates training from career-ready preparation
- What support do you get? Can you ask questions? Is there a tutor? Or are you left on your own with pre-recorded videos?
Our programme ticks all of these boxes. Take a look at what’s included and see for yourself.
